How to add Microsoft Clarity to Shopware 6 (GDPR-compliant)

Step by step – with cookie consent, heatmaps and e-commerce tracking. Set up in minutes.

You know customers abandon your checkout – but not why? Microsoft Clarity shows you: with session recordings and heatmaps that make every real user session visible. Best of all, Clarity is completely free. In this guide you’ll add Clarity to your Shopware 6 store in minutes – in a GDPR-compliant way.

What is Microsoft Clarity – and why use it with Shopware?

Microsoft Clarity is a free web analytics tool that delivers three things classic statistics don’t show: session recordings (videos of real visits), heatmaps (where users click and scroll) and automatic insights such as “rage clicks” or “dead clicks”. For Shopware merchants that’s invaluable: you see exactly where in the buying process customers get stuck.

Requirements

Step 1: Create a Clarity project

Sign in at clarity.microsoft.com and create a new project. Give it a name and enter your shop URL. After creation you’ll find the project ID in the project settings – a short string like abcdefghij. Copy it.

Step 2: Install the plugin

Buy the plugin in the Shopware Store and install it in your Shopware admin under Extensions → My extensions. After activation it appears in your list of active plugins.

Step 3: Enter the project ID & configure privacy

Open the plugin configuration and paste your Clarity project ID. Then set the privacy options:

Step 4: Verify consent & tracking

Open your shop in a private browser window. In the cookie banner, Clarity now appears under the “Statistics” group. Accept it and browse a few pages. Within minutes the first recordings and heatmaps show up in your Clarity dashboard.

Tip: run through the entire buying process yourself once – from product view to order confirmation. That way you immediately see all funnel events arriving cleanly in Clarity.

Real-world example: understanding cart abandoners

A fashion merchant was puzzled by many checkout abandonments. Thanks to funnel tracking, they filtered Clarity for sessions with the begin_checkout event but no purchase – and a cart value above €100. The recordings revealed that on mobile a voucher field was covering the “Continue” button. A small CSS fix – and mobile conversion rose measurably.

Conclusion

With Microsoft Clarity and our Shopware plugin you understand your customers’ behaviour in minutes – free, GDPR-compliant and without coding. Instead of just seeing abandonment rates, you see the causes.
